Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique uses a gentle rolling-type move over the skin in specific locations, designed to disturb the underlying fascia, muscle and organs.

Most of these moves can be made through light clothing with the client lying, sitting or standing.

Whilst the pressure can be adapted to suit the individual, deep or prolonged pressure is not used – making Bowen a suitable therapy for everyone from the newborn to athletes, the elderly and disabled.

Between each set of moves, there are short pauses or ‘breaks’ which allow the appropriate response to take place within the body.

Bowen is generally relaxing and pleasant to receive, with a session typically lasting between 30 and 60 minutes.

Amongst others, symptoms which have been reported to respond to the Bowen Technique include:

  • Back Pain
  • Colic
  • Digestive Issues
  • Dyspraxia
  • Elbow Pain
  • Hamstring Problems
  • Hay Fever
  • Headache / Migraine
  • Hormone Imbalance
  • Jaw Problems
  • Neck Pain
  • Pregnancy & Fertility Issues
  • Respiratory Conditions
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder Restriction
  • Sleep Issues
  • Sports Injuries

* These benefits have been taken from written testimonials. Bowen does not claim to treat specific conditions.

Change is often observed within 3 sessions, although chronic conditions may require ongoing appointments.

The body may continue to respond to Bowen moved for up to 10 days.

Bowen Therapists will not aim to alter your medication unless qualified to do so. They may however refer you back to your GP for a review.

There are certain therapies which do not mix well with Bowen, please mention any other appointments to your Therapist before booking.

What do clients have to say about Bowen?

A Road Traffic Accident led to compression fracture of vertebrae.
Symptoms caused difficulty in general mobility and inability to work –

“From the very first session there was considerable improvement week by week in my mobility and a decrease in back pain.
My posture has considerably improved, and I am now able to work full time. I am also able to drive again which has restored my independence and confidence. I am so grateful to my Therapist and to the Bowen Technique”

– Iain Treadway

“I have been a long-term sufferer of lower back pain.

I have tried everything from extensive Chiropractors to NHS Physios. All seemed to remedy the pain, but none showed an interest in a cure. I felt the benefits of the first session instantly. The therapist gave great advise on aftercare and after just two sessions I feel a lot stronger physically and the pain has disappeared.”

– Pearse O’Halloran

Your Ear Care

Blocked ears? We can help.
Sylvia Kewish, PhD, MSc, BSc, FDSc, MSHAA, HAD

After completing my PhD in biology I started my career in audiology 18 years ago with a large private hearing aid company. I retrained as a fully qualified hearing aid dispenser registered with the HCPC (HAD01696) in 2009-2011 and over the years I have worked for all major high street/national hearing aid companies in various locations around England. During this time I established several successfully led practices and trained and supervised placement students, healthcare assistants and audiology clinical coordinators.

Later I specialised in tinnitus assessments and tinnitus treatments (Levo, Acoustic CR Neuromodulation, combination devices) in Harley Street, London, Birmingham, and other locations.

Testimonials

The Audiologist I saw was extremely professional and efficient. She took the time to explain what she was doing during the appointment. She was friendly and seemed very confident in her job.

It was an excellent experience, I felt that the clinician was genuinely interested in my needs and preferences… I was able to ask questions and felt relaxed and very reassured by her caring and thoughtful approach.

The clinician was so pleasant and helpful and now I can hear detail I didn’t expect to hear again. She was genuinely interested in what I had to say and was very very helpful.

The audiologist was fantastic. Very informative and helpful. Friendly and professional, makes a lovely change from some places. My Dad felt at ease and I was able to explain everything about his hearing and health.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

It is advisable to use Earol spray twice or three-times a day to soften the wax over a period of 3-5 days prior to your appointment.

Please do not use any objects such as ear buds or hairpins to remove was as these could push earwax deeper towards the eardrum and cause more problems, including trauma.

What can I expect on the day?

Every procedure in my clinic will start and finish with detailed otoscopy/checking of the ear and a detailed history of your hearing to ensure maximum safety. Based on your previous history and your wax buildup we will find the most efficient and safest method to make your ears wax-free again.

Are there any risks?

Before booking your appointment, please consider that following contraindications will prevent my service provision as the procedure may not be considered safe (please call us if you experienced any of the conditions below):

  1. Inability to cooperate during procedure

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ear wax?

Wax is the product of oil-producing/sebaceous glands which combined with dry skin shed from the canal and eardrum and usually moves towards the canal entrance. Ear wax presence is beneficial due to its ability to reduce bacterial growth by lowering pH in the canal, trapping foreign bodies (dust, insects, etc) and acting as skin emolient.

How do I know I have too much ear wax?

Excess of ear wax can result in reduced hearing levels, increased tinnitus, discomfort or pain, itchiness or dizziness. Hearing aid users might also experience increased level of acoustic feedback or whistling.

Why do I have too much wax in my ears?

Wax build uo can be attributed to several factors. It has been shown that genetic pre-disposition, diet, age, use of hearing aids or hearing protection/ear phones such as airpods, can increase the probability of ear wax problems. Some other factors include the presence of narrow canals (or canals with significant stenosis – narrowing) or the precense of hard/bristly hairs in the canals.

Which are safe removal techniques?

Safe techniques endorsed by NICE (the National Institute of Clinical Excellence) and used in NHS include:

  1. ear irrigation using an electronic machine that pumps water through a single use plastic tip into the ear at a controlled pressure,
  2. microsuction using a find metal sterile tube attached to the suction machine with controlled pressure and
  3. manual removal with a hook, Jobson Horne probe or mini-crocodile forceps.
